Day 1—June 9, 2013

After a long and tiring day of travel, we have finally arrived in St. Kitts! Day 1 was filled with tons of fun and excitement. After waking up bright and early for a 4:45 meeting time, everyone made his or her way to the airport. We encountered a small hiccup when Miss Yen and Adam ended up at the wrong airport due to some early morning confusion, but we quickly resolved the issue. Thanks to quick thinking and a taxi driver who also happened to be up at 4:30 in the morning, everyone made it to Reagan with plenty of time to spare. The first flight provided excellent sleeping time, so we all arrived in Miami feeling slightly less tired. After a brief layover, we boarded the second plane of the day and arrived in St. Kitts two and a half hours later. A bus took us to our hotel right on the water, and we all spent some time settling down and beginning to unpack. Next, we made our way to the grocery store fifteen minutes away to pick up some food and drinks. On this walk we experienced the first of what will hopefully become many animal encounters. We saw monkeys, lizards, cats, cows, and various types of birds, all within a thirty-minute time span. We then enjoyed a delicious dinner in the hotel restaurant before ending the day with a swim in the pool, complete with games of Marco Polo and Sharks and Minnows. We also made fast friends with the local cats at the hotel, who follow us everywhere, and tries to come into our rooms. Of course, we are not allowed and won’t touch/pet/ play with them. All in all, Day 1 was certainly very tiring but filled with fun. Everyone is looking forward to the amazing experiences that we are certain to have as the trip progresses!
